The Premise

The body performs differently when it is nourished instead of depleted.

Written by Elixir MRE® founder Tom Gianelli, The Best Medicine explores the intersection between Western medicine, Eastern wellness philosophies, plant-based nutrition, movement, recovery science, ritual, mental resilience, and long-term health optimization.

Drawing from decades of personal experience in athletics, climbing culture, injury rehabilitation, performance nutrition, and wellness research, the book examines how modern lifestyles contribute to many of the chronic health struggles people face today, and how intentional changes in nutrition, movement, stress management, and daily ritual can help support the body's natural ability to recover and adapt.

"The body performs differently when it is nourished instead of depleted."
A Modern Approach to Wellness

Where modern medicine excels, and where it falls short.

Rather than rejecting Western medicine outright, the book examines where it excels, emergency care, trauma intervention, surgery, and life-saving treatment, while exploring the limitations of a healthcare system that often addresses symptoms without addressing the lifestyle, nutritional, emotional, and environmental conditions contributing to chronic illness in the first place.

Using examples ranging from digestive disorders and inflammation to anxiety, depression, hormone imbalance, metabolic dysfunction, chronic stress, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune conditions, The Best Medicine explores how modern culture, processed foods, overstimulation, poor recovery, environmental toxins, sleep disruption, and chronic nervous-system stress can gradually wear down the body over time.

The Three-Stage Training Philosophy

Core. Power. Strength.

A response to the overtraining culture of modern fitness. Rather than glorifying burnout or injury-driven training, the methodology focuses on balance, sustainability, movement quality, recovery, and long-term physical resilience.

Stage 01

Core

Stability, mobility, posture, balance, breath control, flexibility, and nervous-system support through practices inspired by yoga, functional movement, and rehabilitation training.

Stage 02

Power

Body movement and athletic performance through calisthenics, climbing-inspired movement, pull-ups, push-ups, dips, bodyweight training, coordination, endurance, and explosive movement.

Stage 03

Strength

Traditional resistance training and weightlifting designed to support muscular development, bone density, metabolism, recovery, and longevity, without sacrificing mobility or joint health.

The Story

The evolution of Elixir MRE®

The Catalyst

The book tells the deeply personal story behind Elixir MRE® and the events that shaped its philosophy. From free solo climbing throughout Malibu and Southern California to devastating spinal injury, rehabilitation, loss, and rebuilding, The Best Medicine traces how real-life hardship ultimately became the catalyst for a new way of approaching recovery, nutrition, and resilience.

The Build

What began as homemade nutrition shared among climbers, surfers, and athletes slowly evolved into a wellness company rooted in community, movement, recovery, and clean plant-based nutrition. The products were never designed around trends. They were built from necessity.

The Constant

And through fires, injuries, economic hardship, gym closures, changing industries, and decades of evolution, the philosophy behind Elixir has remained remarkably consistent.

The Philosophy
Support the body intelligently. Reduce unnecessary stress. Recover deeply. Move forward.
